Terms and Conditions for Star Alliance Upgrade Awards
- Upgrades are valid only on participating Star Alliance carriers. Please refer to united.com.br/starallianceupgradeawards for participating Star Alliance carriers. Additional Star Alliance member airlines will be added in the future.
- Upgrades are valid for the next higher class of service; double upgrades are not permitted.
- On three cabin aircraft, you may upgrade from paid Economy to Business or from paid Business to First.
- On two cabin aircraft, you may upgrade from paid Economy to Business or First, depending on the service offered by the operating carrier.
- Star Alliance Upgrade Awards are available on all participating Star Alliance carriers from fares booked in C, D, Y, and B. (The following carriers offer upgrades off these additional fare classes: Lufthansa - J class and ANA - J and Z classes).
- One award is required for each upgraded segment.
- No stopovers are permitted.
- Mileage required is per person, per flight segment.
- Some carriers may impose blackout periods when upgrade awards are not permitted.
- Upgrade awards may not be used on MileagePlus award tickets.
- Some discount travel sites, such as Priceline and Hotwire, issue tickets where the airline is not disclosed until after payment. These types of tickets are not upgradeable. Please check with the discount travel site where the ticket was purchased for terms and conditions.
- Upgrade awards cannot be used on industry discount, agency discount, free, or award tickets.
- Ticket must be issued in the paid class of service before an upgrade is issued.
- Upgrades on code share flights - where a ticket was issued by one airline (the marketing carrier), but the flight is being operated by a different airline -- are excluded. The marketing carrier and the operating carrier must be identical.
- Upgrades must be requested at least 24 hours prior to departure. Upgrades requested within 24 hours will not be honored.
- Upgrades may be requested up to 331 days in advance (56 days in advance on ANA; 28 days in advance on Air New Zealand).
- Waitlisting is not permitted.
- Standby upgrades at the airport are not permitted.
- Miles will be accrued based on original class of service ticketed, not on upgraded class of service.
- Seat assignments, special meals, and other such needs must be requested through the operating airline.
- Cancellation of an upgrade will cancel the entire flight segment. Contact the operating carrier prior to cancellation.
- The maximum number of customers who can be upgraded on a single itinerary for a Star Alliance Upgrade Award is four.
- Travel using Star Alliance Upgrade Awards is subject to the rules and policies of the operating carrier.
- The number of miles required to upgrade your itinerary is based on the day the request is made and is subject to change.
- Program rules are subject to change.
